With high blood pressure, essentially, your heart is working harder than it should. When you are exercising, working out or working in the yard, your heart rate increases to pump blood throughout your body so your blood pressure increases.  And it should, because you need more blood to feed your muscles.

Now, what happens with high blood pressure is this: you are sitting on the couch reading a book or having dinner, and your heart is working like it is when you are exercising or working hard. It shouldn’t be working so hard. Over time, if the heart is working too hard it can weaken the heart. Then, you have an increased chance of strokes, and heart attacks, and things like that.

There are a few things you want to think about with regard to your health when it comes to high blood pressure. One is inflammation. With inflammation, the blood vessels get a lot more brittle and harder, so blood does not flow as well. Your heart has to work harder. Minimize inflammation by improving digestion. Try  getting a lot of greens and good fats in your diet.

Next, you also want to look at being overweight. Because if you are overweight, your heart has to work a lot harder to pump blood throughout your body. You have a lot more cells, and you are carrying a lot more load when you are moving around, so it is a lot harder on your heart.

You also want to look at alignment, specifically upper cervical or upper neck alignment. An upper cervical chiropractor will evaluate your posture and take specific X-rays to see if your upper neck is out of alignment. If that is so, it can put pressure on the brain stem and the upper part of your neck. We know the brain stem controls heart, heart rate, heart control, and blood pressure. If the brain stem is not functioning right, there is a chance your heart won’t work right, and that can create high blood pressure. Studies out of Chicago have shown that when an upper cervical adjustment (using the NUCCA Procedure) is given, blood pressure is lowered. What we believe, is that by improving the alignment, you improve brain stem function, and then the blood pressure balances.

If you or someone you know has high blood pressure, find an upper cervical chiropractor and get a spinal evaluation. They are not going to cure high blood pressure, and we are not telling you to get off your medications, but if you are out alignment, they can make that correction. As a side benefit, there is a good chance you will see your blood pressure decrease. So, if you have this issue, or someone you know does, look for an upper cervical chiropractor in your area.
